Light
it seems like nothin/ that i do / can hold up a candle to the brightness of you / shine like a moonbeam on the first winter snow / making your promises there in the shadows / even when nothin’ else seems true / hope the light it keeps shining / light it keeps shining like you / went to the healer and she knew the drill / said you got to tread softly in these spaces you fill / stand tall and say it with your heart on your sleeve / practice some forgiveness, baby / and you shall be released / until there’s nothin’ you can’t break through / when the light it is shining light it is shining for you / when this old world is on fire / try a little love to cool it down / when there is nothin’ more to say / that could stand up to reason for keeping the pace / time picks up and moves on and it don’t look back / leaves us here fumbling with all the pieces it left / fumbling with nothin’ but each other to get through / may the light keep on shining / light keep on seeing us through
Lone Reckless Wave
once upon a time in this big world / in a blue house on a hard-to-find road / there sat inside a very proud man / and his little girl such a marvel / her fingers and tiny toes / he traveled back in his history / as he gazed into her wide and wondering eyes / this big old world has been rough on me / but i ain’t gonna let you see the trouble and the hard times / a lone reckless wave / heartbeat like thunder / it’ll rage with the storm that nearly pulls you under / when i was small i watched him walk away / when the day grows quiet i feel him still / i wandered long and wide to fill the space so dark / when you break apart pieces fall into arms that are near / lone reckless wave / heartbeat like thunder / it’ll rage with the storm that nearly pulls you under / when i hear you cry / i’ll always come running / lone reckless wave / heartbeat like thunder / it’ll rage with the storm that nearly pulls you under / when i hear you cry / i’ll always come running / lone reckless wave / heartbeat like thunder / it’ll rage with the storm that nearly pulls you under
Longing to Remember
silver stars abide with moon and tide / the season came like a flash against the dark / where the trees grew green, sun-kissed and serene / with smiles so wide they beat inside your heart / summer days came and they cleared away the rain / from May straight on through September / leave us longing to remember / along the briny shore as in years before / the tide arrived in circles one by one / open hearts to the sea in silent reverie / we tried to wait for it, wait for it to come / summer days came and they cleared away the rain / from May straight on through September / leave us longing to remember / let go of your self / love is all that’s left here / take leave of your self / love is all we leave behind / do you notice the way we turn the page / as if memories were meant to be forgotten / in tall grass we stood eyes to tangled wood / watched the years line up like blackbirds on a wire / summer days came and they cleared away the rain / from May straight on through September / leave us longing to remember / leave us longing to remember / leave us longing to remember
March 25th
conversation march 25th / in all honesty i was only half listening / come to find out another’s going that way again / and now i’m hanging on your every word / that look on your face / i make a wish for better times / i’ll dream nothing but wide open spaces for you / i remember when you told me / our light shines out from the inside / and we get ourselves into trouble when we fear we got something to hide / oh, this life doesn’t turn out anything like you plan / and good friends they still love you when you’re half listening / the years they roll by / they crash and they land til we’re bones against the sand / i thought you’d be here / oh, really i did / i’ve known that smile since we were just little kids / so you hold my hand and i’ll fight these tears / i guess i’ll see you where the clouds somehow disappear
My Family
holidays are coming around again / people putting up trees / light the menorah in the window there darlin’ / think about your history / snow glows white outside my window/ i hear we’re in for quite a freeze / these last few weeks the wind’s blown right through me / ghosts traveling through on the breeze / they are the past / we are the here and the now / these hopes for tomorrow / merge into the December air / we prepare the feast / they share the recipes / together, we are forged as family / my family is a far cry from the father and the son / my father he speaks with a prophet’s words and a sinner’s tongue / no matter what you believe / we’re here to celebrate all we’ve become / we’re here to recognize what we’ve become / holidays are coming around again / people working on their trees / light the menorah in the window my darlin’ / give thanks to your family / moon glows white outside the window / looks like we’re in for a quite a freeze / these last few days the wind is so cold it blows right through me / ghosts traveling through on the breeze / they are the past / you and me, we are the here and the now / and these visions for tomorrow / they will get us out of here somehow / my family is a far cry from the Bible on the shelf / my mother she speaks of the sacrifice for others of the self / no matter what you believe / were here to celebrate something beyond ourselves / we’re here to recognize something larger than ourselves
